Excellent review. I use a SLIK-Pro 330DX tripod which I have modified in the following manner:

1. Substituting the optional short center column for the longer stock column.

2. Substituting an Adorama Flashpoint F-1 Arca Compatible, Magnesium ball head for the heavy and awkward SLIK pan-tilt head. This really reduces the weight (1-pound and 7-ounces).

It supports my 40D and 70-200mm f/4L IS lens with no problems.

I use a RRS L-bracket to attach non-tripod-ring equipped camera/lenses such as my 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens. That way, I don't need to cantilever my camera over to the side when shooting in the vertical position. It is a much more secure arrangement.

My set-up is fairly short but, works very well for my uses and at 23 ounces, I can carry the tripod anywhere.

The Silk 212DX is a fine tripod unless you ever need a part. I lost my quick release and was quoted a price of over $30 for what I believe is a $0.05 part.
